Holistic care for mokopuna, supporting emotional and cultural wellbeing

Whānau Care

Whānau Care is a partnership between Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and Oranga Tamariki, dedicated to supporting mokopuna (children) and their whānau (families) to thrive.

We provide culturally grounded care that prioritises whakapapa (heritage) and strengthens family connections.

Service available at:

Our Approach

We believe that mokopuna thrive when they remain connected to their whānau and hapū.

Our services take a whānau-centred approach, ensuring children in alternative care maintain strong links to their tūpuna (ancestors) and cultural identity.

We uphold the mana of every mokopuna and whānau we work with, centering their moemoā (dreams) and wawata (aspirations) in everything we do.

We offer:
  • Whānau Care Support – Strengthening family bonds and cultural identity
  • Safe and Nurturing Environments – Providing stability and care for tamariki
  • Transition Support – Helping rangatahi (young people) navigate independent living
  • Advocacy and Resources – Connecting whānau with essential services
